working together
BRIGHTON BOOKS PUBLISHING is a partnership between Jacqueline Pollard and Selma Montford. They started working together 18 years ago on the first edition of Backyard Brighton, a joint venture between the Lewis Cohen Urban Studies Centre at Brighton Polytechnic and QueenSpark Books.
This working arrangement continued for another 5 years during which time Back Street Brighton (recently republished by QueenSpark Books), Brighton Behind the Front and Blighty Brighton were published. The Lewis Cohen Studies Centre then published D-Day: Brighton Remembers.
After the closure of the Lewis Cohen Urban Studies Centre in 1995 Jacqueline and Selma established Brighton Books Publishing and have since published 12 books.

Jacqueline carries out the text and picture research, and conducts the interviews. Selma designs the books and edits the text with the help of editorial advisers.
The books are a patchwork of historical research, interviews, hitherto unpublished photographs, maps, quotations from documents, compiled with different groups of people according to the subject matter of the book.
This mixture of sources of information makes a lively account of either a particular part of Brighton, or Brighton at a particular time in its history.
The conventional language of official documents is contrasted with informal memories and observations in the spoken, and, sometimes, the written word of personal accounts. Using visual material they contrast architects measured drawings with photographs, maps and plans with drawings, prints with paintings.
history groups
Members of the history group of the Roundhill Society researched the history of their area and produced a book 'Rose Hill to Roundhill: a Brighton Community' in partnership with Brighton Books Publishing. This same group are now working on a book entitled 'The Lost Gardens of London Road'.
future projects
Selma and Jacqueline welcome comments about their work and are always interested to hear about possible future projects.
They would also be interested to hear from groups of people who would be keen to publish a book about their area.
